How it works
Initial Consultation
If you’re considering working with me, we’ll begin by scheduling an initial consultation. This can be done via zoom or over the phone. If you are interested in online therapy, a zoom consultation can help you determine whether we can connect at a psychological and emotional level in spite of the screen that divides us. The consultation will last for 30 minutes during which I will ask you some questions to understand whether I am the right person for you at this time and I will also explain how I work. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions or voice any concerns. Most importantly, it is a chance for both of us to see whether we are a good fit for each other. After the consultation you may want to take some time to reflect. If I am not the right person for you, I will do my best to guide you towards other services or resources.
If you decide to work with me
If you decide to work with me we will book a first session to do an initial assessment. This will help us understand what brought you to therapy and how we can make the most of our time together. From there we can decide on the best approach moving forward. I work in a collaborative way, meaning I will ensure that you are fully onboard with every decision we make along the way. After that we will have regular sessions, either weekly or fortnightly for as long as needed. There will be instances where one of us will not be available for the sessions of course, and that’s ok.
During therapy
It’s common for people to worry about whether they’ll have enough to say or if they’ll know what to talk about. Others may worry about talking too much. These concerns are completely normal, especially if you’ve never been in psychotherapy before. You don’t know what to expect. However, let me reassure you that there is no right or wrong way of doing therapy. Each client approaches it in the way that works best for them and that is perfectly fine. I’ll be there to support you throughout the process. If you struggle with talking I will guide the conversation more. If you talk a lot, I will help you slow down and refocus. You don’t need to have something prepared for the session. Whatever needs attention in that moment will naturally come up.
I like to review progress every six sessions. This gives us a chance to reflect on any changes or new insights, as well as discuss what’s been helpful and what might not be working as well. If we’re on the right track, it’s a good indication that we’ve found an effective way to work together. If not, we can reassess what isn’t working, explore why, and figure out how to adjust our approach.
