‘Venting anger does not solve the problem that anger signals.’

- Harriet Lerner

Anger

Often anger is one of those difficult emotions we don’t want to deal with. It can be shame inducing and not very acceptable in our culture and society. We may have learnt this from a very early age.

So we hide it. We bury it as deeply as we possibly can. We avoid it like the plague. We’ll do anything so we don’t feel it.

And as a result, it lingers. It comes back stronger and faster. Until it overwhelms us.

It can become scary to us or to others. It can get us into trouble.

It can also cause physical symptoms.

However, anger is one of the basic human emotions. It has continued to evolve with the human species because it gives us a survival advantage. Like all the other emotions, anger is trying to give us a message about our environment. It is a sensation that we feel in our body. It is a call for action. It’s an attempt to keep us safe or bring back stability and predictability.

However, by suppressing anger for many years, sometimes we lose the ability to recognise the signal. We lose touch with anger, and that’s when anger starts to run the show behind the scenes…whether we are aware of it or not.

Anger just is. We can’t stop it or prevent it. What we can do, is re-learn to listen to it so we can understand what it wants and channel it into positive change.
